Reebok's list of ambassadors could double as a list of ideal dinner guests. In the past year, the brand has worked with Gal Gadot, Gigi Hadid, Ariana Grande, and Future, just to name a few. The latest addition to the squad is Cardi B, who announced her partnership with the brand this week.
Aside from her lighting fast ascension to rap superstardom, a Reebok spokesperson tells SELF that Cardi's unique personal and career perspectives are what drew her to the brand. "We chose to work with Cardi because of her authenticity and unapologetic attitude. She’s not just a world-class entertainer, she’s a mother, a style icon, and above all, a fearless individual who’s followed her own path," a brand representative explains. "Reebok is all about celebrating nonconformity and Cardi is our ideal collaborator."
We're likely about to see Cardi around town in a head-to-toe wardrobe of athleisure, but what's especially noteworthy is the '90s-style outfit she wore for the brand announcement. Like Armie Hammer before her, Cardi seems to be working to bring back the tracksuit…and you know what? We're ready for it.
She's styled in the Classics Advanced Track Suit and Aztrek sneakers, two garments that wouldn't be out of place on the set of '80s-inspired GLOW or in a '90s rap video. The throwback choice was purposeful, says a brand spokesperson, as a nod to Reebok's "longstanding history of supporting women and standing out—from being the first to create a workout shoe exclusively for women, to putting bold-faced expletives and hip-hop stars in ad campaigns in the early '90s."
The mix of performance wear and athleisure shows off what the brand is calling Cardi's "boldness and approach to life." As for the fans who step out in their own tracksuit or throwback crewneck, designers hope it'll help them "[take] their own path and [be] their authentic selves."
For now, you can shop Cardi's look online. As for an eventual design collab with the star, the brand is keeping mum: "We are excited for what's to come." That's just mysterious enough for us to hold out hope that a full line is on the way. But if you can't wait to cop Cardi's style, check out our favorite Reebok pieces that have gotten the Cardi B stamp of approval:
